The Wiltshire Barn Project

Courses at The Daffodil Barn & Tedworth House 2017

guilds

Two types of courses are run by Bound by Veterans:

  • City & Guilds courses which lead to awards and qualifications. The content of each course is summarised below. These are accredited by the Shepherds Centre for Book Arts, which administers the tuition. Bound by Veterans members may also attend courses run directly by Shepherds (where shown below), which are held at the Barn.
  • Craft lessons and workshops run specifically for Bound by Veterans members to provide both therapy and wider bookbinding knowledge and experience. The workshops include skills and techniques (eg hot-foil printing, box-making) that are not covered on the City & Guilds course syllabus.

CITY & GUILDS COURSES

LEVEL 1 is for designed for a beginner in the craft. Each Unit qualifies for an Award.

  • City & Guilds Unit 118 – Basic Principles and Making Notebooks: The foundation course for those with no prior experience in bookbinding.
  • City & Guilds Unit 119 – Photograph Albums and Slip Cases: Suitable for those who have completed the foundation course.

In addition, to achieve a Certificate each Veteran will need to take:

  • City & Guilds Craft Design Course: A course for bookbinders covering all the essential design requirements, including making up a folio of design ideas, basic colour theory, use of a range of common craft materials to create textures and simple patterns, and trying out a range of ideas and techniques which promote bookbinding skills.

LEVEL 2 continues and develops skills, adding more complex techniques to the learning programme. It is suitable for those with some knowledge of bookbinding in a craft context. Each Unit qualifies for an Award.

  • City & Guilds Unit 220 - Leather-cased Books: Design and make books with different styles of leather binding
  • City & Guilds Unit 221 - Alternative and Historical Bindings: Design and make a book with a ‘Coptic Style’ binding

In addition, to achieve a Certificate each Veteran will need to develop the portfolio of design ideas created for the Level 1 Certificate.
